This lecture will be presented by DEREK MARSHALL. Derek is the Head of College Chambers, Southampton. He is a barrister, arbitrator and civil dispute mediator, as well as a trustee and non-executive director of a prominent local charity. He has over ten years’ experience as a civil dispute mediator, both by private appointment and Court direction and currently conducts about 30 such meetings a year. The cases he mediates include those involving deadlocked company boards, intractable family arguments over wills and inheritances, boundary and property litigation and commercial disputes about quality and price. His style is to listen carefully to the parties to understand the key issues as they see them, guide the parties as to the strengths and weaknesses of their case and to develop ways in which they can reach their own resolution. He will also carry out a neutral evaluation where it is helpful to the parties, so that they can focus on matters which should be capable of agreement and avoid wasteful disputes. He is accredited by the Standard and Competences of Mediation Advocacy and is listed in the current Legal 500 for civil commercial work.
